I must admit, I have rarely written about my beloved Kansas City Chiefs here… but I have rarely had so much to be excited about. But today… well, today is a different story… the most unlikely of circumstances came together and my favorite NFL team is playoff bound!!!
What a day… a victory eked out over Jacksonville at the best football venue in the NFL (I was there, and it was GREAT)… then news that the Bengals lost in overtime to Pittsburg… then hearing that the Titans were trounced by the Patriots… then listening to the Denver broadcast of their game with the 49’ers to hear those wonderful words… “The kick is on the way… and the Broncos season is officially over!”
I’m still finding it hard to believe that they were so fortunate, and that next Saturday, they’ll actually still be playing football. For now? Excitement rules… what a great way to wrap up 2006!
Yes! Remember I was born in KC! Go Chiefs!
We are originally from Kansas. My husband is a die hard Kansas City Chiefs fan which can be problematic here in Oklahoma.:) This was the first piece of news that he shared with me today.
For an underachieving, lackluster team that plays in the 2ND BEST VENUE in the NFL, I guess the Chiefs didn’t do all that bad. They’re not quite the Packers yet, but maybe someday they can attain that level of greatness!
From a fan of the team with the largest fan base in the NFL, not to mention the greatest venue in the NFL, I say congratulations!
🙂
John,
I was actually at the game on Sunday as well–my first to a Chiefs game. My wife was able to get less than half price tickets as a teacher so we took the whole family including sons who were home visiting for the holidays and a couple of friends from church. My wife took them all early after attending the early service at church. I arrived about midway through the first quarter as I was preaching Sunday a.m. in both services since our senior pastor was gone to Texas to visit family. It was an exciting game to say the least. It made sitting through the cold and snow flurries worth it when the other teams’ losses opened a door for a playoff berth.
Yes, John that Sunday was a proud day in Chiefs history. However, the following Saturday those chears turned to cries. That was the most miserable game ever! Were was the Offense? This season goes to further my belief that the Chiefs are the Cubs of football. In the words of every sad Cubs fan “maybe next season.”
Brian! Awesome of you to stop by the blog… that Sunday was an awesome trip, wasn’t it? I was so glad that you were able to come with me.
I think you’ve said it right though… the Chiefs certainly seem to be the Cubs of football. Thirty-seven years since our last Superbowl, and it feels like almost that long since our last playoff win (okay, so I haven’t been alive THAT long, but still). Always good enough to keep our hopes up, but never good enough to follow through when it matters most.
Anyway, I’m still in disbelief over yesterday’s game… seven straight three-and-outs to start the game… a blown 23 yard field goal… barely 100 yards in total offense… truly one of the most sad offensive showings ever for KC. At least the defense played fairly well and kept the score somewhat respectable (far better than the 41-0 Herm’s Jets laid on Indy a few years back!).
If there was one positive from the game, though, I’d have to say it was this… at least they didn’t crush our hopes at the last moment. You could see that loss coming pretty early in the game. Not much of a positive, I know, but it’s hard to take much of anything good from yesterday’s train wreck!
John, the only thing I will add is this. If the offense was in the game at all, the defense would have been strong all game. After the defense played the first three quarters they just had nothing left. Sad, sad day.
I bet you’re right, Brian… if the offense would have performed even at a mediocre level, I think the game would have turned out quite a bit differently. We might not have won, but it would have been much closer.
