Mark 12:28-31 (NIV)
28One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”29“The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”
Scripture makes it pretty clear that the greatest expectation… the greatest commandment from God… the “main thing” for believers… it’s love.
We’re supposed to love God four-fold… with our heart, mind, soul, and strength. We’re suppose to love others as we love ourselves.
Ever really sit and think about what this means? Ever study what Scripture says elsewhere about the heart, mind, soul, and strength? How do you truly love God with all of your heart? All of your mind? All of your soul? All of your strength? And what does it truly mean to love others as we love ourselves?
These are topics I want to dig into a bit. Something tells me that there’s more to this passage than we normally take from it after a cursory reading.
So check back soon. I’ll be sharing posts looking at each part of the great commandment.
