What Is It?

Okay, here’s a fun one for the weekend. Take a look at the picture below, and identify what I’m standing by.

If I’ve shown you this before or told you about it, please don’t ruin the fun for everyone else.

Happy guessing!

UPDATE:

Here’s the long-awaited answer… I was standing by the hub (where the blades attach) of a Suzlon S-88 wind turbine. Check out the following picture to see what it looks like complete. The caption points to the hub.

Maybe it’s just that I’m a complete geek, but I think this kind of stuff is absolutely amazing.

I looks as if it’s some sort of junction for some sort of pipe. Perhaps a storm drain .. in which case that might be a “manhole” we see hints of atop it.

It could also be for industrial piping such as that for a paper mill, a lime plant, or even a natural gas pipeline, or perhaps a crude oil pipeline. Maybe even a transcontinental petroleum product pipeline.

Probably, thought, it’s the Jolly Green Giant’s crack pipe.

John, I believe you are standing next to a human being dressed in jeans, hi-visibility vest and hard hat. By the way, before you go out for a roll in the countryside next time, might I suggest a little panel-beating to tidy up your looks? :p

Oh, the human being may be a fake, by the way. Note the wooden prop at the back to hold him up. Perhaps he’s a plant. I’d mind my panels, if I were you. 😉

Hehe John, can’t catch me – I’m outta here! 😀

I was partially right, at least. It’s the Jolly Green Giant’s desk fan.

Seriously, in September 1984, Peg and I took our first bigtime vacation and went to Oahu. I’ll never forget rounding a point and heading up the Eastern side of the island and happening on a huge field of wind generators. It was the first time I even knew any were up and running, and it was impressive.

I got to see some of those in… I want to say New Mexico or Arizona or… shoot, out in one of those 4 Corners states. Lined up on the horizon. OR WAS IT KANSAS? Anyway, rows of them. Awesome.

Bob, the Green Giant lives in Tecumseh, Ontario just outside of Windsor. I know. I’ve seen his home.
