Chiefs Youth Movement… (Episode 7)

What a difference a week makes! After an embarrassing loss to Tennessee at home, where the Chiefs gave up a franchise record 332 yards rushing, the Chiefs made a game of it today on the road versus the Jets behind the strong play of third string quarterback Tyler Thigpen.

Amazing, isn’t it?

It’s hard to believe, but Brett Favre wasn’t the best #4 on the field today. While he did come through on the last drive when he needed it most, Favre kept the Chiefs in the game all day with his miscues (he threw three interceptions on the day, directly leading to 14 of the Chiefs points). In just his second NFL start, Thigpen played smart football most of the day, ending up 25 of 36 with 2 TDs and no interceptions.

I can’t help but point the finger at Herm for this loss though… in the 4th quarter, holding a three point lead, the Chiefs coaching staff chose to try sitting on the lead by keeping the ball on the ground for three straight plays (after having very little success doing so all day). Held short of the first down on a predictable 3rd and 3 call, the Chiefs punt away, blow coverage, give up good field position, and six plays later the game is pretty much over courtesy of Favre’s game winning pass.

For the most part, the Chiefs put in an NFL quality effort today. It’s a shame they came up short.

The interesting thing? Thigpen looked GOOD today. I guess it’s possible the Chiefs QB for the future is now their starter. Time will tell.

That would be nice, however they have Dante Culpepper coming in on Tuesday for practice…

Even if they sign Culpepper (as bad a decision as that would be… he’s washed up), Thigpen will remain starter for at least a couple games… it will take any new quarterback some time to learn an offense.

Hopefully Thigpen will keep playing well and Herm won’t have the chance to botch another decision.

Keeping Thigpen in there is my wish as well. But, we do have a tendency to like those washed up players when we start to panic… We already have one QB with a blown knee, why not two, I guess..
