Favorite Christmas Song?

Yesterday I asked about your favorite Christmas Scripture (or at least which one really speaks to you this year).

How about Christmas songs? What’s at (or at least near) the top of your playlist this year?

For me, it’s either, “Born in Bethlehem”, or “Jesus, Light of the World”, both by Third Day, found on their Christmas Offerings album (tracks 3 and 7 respectively). Check out some of these lyrics:

Born in Bethlehem
Baby Jesus, born in a stable
A humble Savior’s birth
You left Your throne in Heaven above
To live here on the earth

Baby Jesus lying in a manger
Crying for the world
The angels told the shepherds of
The good news for us all

Hallelujah, the King is here
Given for all men
For today, the holy Son of God
Is born in Bethlehem

Come now sinners and you saints
All peasants and all kings
And bow before the earth’s Redeemer
Let all voices sing

Hallelujah, the King is here
Given for all men
For today, the holy Son of God
Is born in Bethlehem

Baby Jesus, do you know
You’ll die for all our sins
Don’t be afraid, for in three days
You will rise again
You will rise again

Jesus, Light of the World
The most beautiful night of the year
All the stars light up the sky
And the city is sparkling with silver and gold
From a million points of light
A reflection of something that’s deeper within
Just a flicker of something more

Jesus, Light of the World
Shine through the darkness
Bright as the day
Jesus, Light of the World
Shine in our hearts
Show us the way tonight

Who is this child in a manger?
Kings bow down and angels sing
The Lord of the Universe
Has come here to save us
A precious Offering
All the heavens above and the earth below
Are filled with the light of Your love

Jesus, Light of the World
Shine through the darkness
Bright as the day
Jesus, Light of the World
Shine in our hearts
Show us the way tonight

Jesus, Light of the World
Shine through the darkness
Bright as the day
Jesus, Light of the World
Shine in our hearts
Show us the way

Jesus, shine, shine
Show us the way
Light of the world
Shine in our hearts
Show us the way tonight,
Oh, Show us the way tonight

It’s not hard to figure out why these are high on my list, given how vividly clear the thought of Jesus as an infant has been to me this year. Both songs clearly focus on our Savior’s birth and the meaning of His birth… yeah… Christmas at its very root.

How about you? What Christmas songs are especially meaningful to you this year?

I’ve always liked “O Holy Night.”

For more modern ones, I really enjoy “Breath of Heaven.”

Both of those, plus Brian Duncan’s The Form of Man.

There’s a song by Relient K called “I Celebrate the Day” that’s phenomenal. Here are the lyrics:

With this Christmas wish is missed
    The point I could convey
If only I could find the words to say to let you know
How much you’ve touched my life because
Here is where you’re finding me
In the exact same place as New Years Eve
And from the lack of my persistency
We’re less than half as close as I wanna be

And the first time that you opened your eyes
Did you realize that you would be my Savior
And the first breath that left your lips
Did you know that it would change this world forever

And so this Christmas I’ll compare
The things I’ve felt in prior years
To what this midnight made so clear
That you have come to meet me here

To look back, And think that
This baby would one day save me
And the hope that, That you give
That you were born so I might really live
To look back, And think that
This baby would one day save me…

And the first time that you opened your eyes
Did you realize that you would be my Savior
And the first breath that left your lips
Did you know that it would change this world forever

    And I
    I celebrate the day
That you were born to die
    So I could one day
Pray for you to save my life
